Discord Image Sizes (2026)

Every Discord image dimension in one place β€” profile picture, server icon, profile banner, and server banner β€” with file size limits and Nitro requirements.

July 6, 20268 min read

Setting up a Discord profile or server means juggling a handful of different image sizes β€” and Discord uses a different dimension for almost every one. Get them wrong and you end up with blurry avatars, cropped-off logos, or banners that won't upload. This guide collects every current Discord image size for 2026 in one place, with the file limits and Nitro rules that go with each.

Recommended dimensions for Discord visual assets, 2026

Profile Picture (Avatar)

Your Discord profile picture β€” the avatar β€” is how everyone sees you across every server. The recommended size is 512 Γ— 512 pixels in a 1:1 square. Discord accepts as small as 128 Γ— 128, but 512 Γ— 512 is the sweet spot: sharp on high-DPI displays without an unnecessarily huge file.

Recommended Size512 Γ— 512 px
Minimum Size128 Γ— 128 px

FormatsPNG, JPG, GIF
Animated AvatarRequires Discord Nitro
Display in Chat~40 px

Discord crops your square avatar into a circle. Treat the safe zone as a circle inscribed in your square canvas β€” anything in the corners gets hidden. Since your avatar often displays at just ~40px in chat, keep the design simple and bold.

Server Icon

The server icon is the round logo that represents your server in the left sidebar. Recommended size is 512 Γ— 512 pixels, square, displayed as a circle. Minimum is 128 Γ— 128.

The catch: the icon renders at roughly 48px in the sidebar. Thin lines, small text, and busy backgrounds all turn to mush at that size. A single bold shape, symbol, or initial works far better.

An animated server icon (GIF) is unlocked either through Discord Nitro on a personal server or through Server Boosting on a community server β€” it's not available on a plain, unboosted server by default.

Profile Banner

The profile banner is the wide strip at the top of your profile card when someone clicks your name. Recommended size is 600 Γ— 240 pixels at a 5:2 ratio. If you also set a per-server profile (a Nitro feature), design at 680 Γ— 240 β€” that size works for both contexts with only minor edge cropping.

Setting a profile banner requires Discord Nitro. Users without Nitro can't add a profile banner at all, so if the option is missing, that's why.

Server Banner

The server banner appears at the top of your server's channel list and in server discovery. Recommended size is 1920 Γ— 1080 pixels at 16:9. Discord will accept a minimum of 960 Γ— 540, but anything below 1080p looks soft on larger screens.

Server banners are a Server Boost perk

Both the profile banner and server banner have their own dedicated guide and resizer β€” if banners are what you're working on, start there.

Emoji & Stickers

Emoji and stickers are the two custom expression assets, and they have their own strict rules:

  • Emoji: 128 Γ— 128 px, max 256 KB, PNG/GIF/WebP/AVIF β€” displays at ~32px in chat
  • Stickers: exactly 320 Γ— 320 px, max 512 KB, PNG/APNG only β€” displays at ~160px

Each has its own deep-dive guide with the full format and slot breakdown β€” see the Discord Emoji Size Guide and Discord Sticker Size Guide linked at the bottom of this page.

What Requires Nitro or Boosting

A lot of Discord's image features are locked behind Nitro (a personal subscription) or Server Boosting (community-funded upgrades). Here's the quick reference:

Design Tips for the Circle Crop

Both avatars and server icons are cropped to a circle, and both display tiny. A few rules keep them looking sharp:

  • Center everything β€” the corners of your square are cut off by the circle mask
  • Add padding β€” don't let the subject touch the circle's edge
  • Bold and simple β€” icons render at ~48px, avatars at ~40px in chat
  • Design for dark mode β€” Discord's default background is dark (#313338)
  • Upload larger, not smaller β€” 512 Γ— 512 downscales cleanly; a tiny source upscales blurry

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is a Discord profile picture (PFP)?

The recommended Discord PFP size is 512 Γ— 512 pixels in a square (1:1) ratio. Discord accepts a minimum of 128 Γ— 128, but 512 Γ— 512 stays sharp on high-DPI screens. The image is cropped to a circle, so keep your subject centered.

What size is a Discord server icon?

The recommended server icon size is 512 Γ— 512 pixels, square, displayed as a circle in the server sidebar. Minimum is 128 Γ— 128. Because it renders at about 48px in the sidebar, use a bold, simple design.

What size is a Discord profile banner?

The recommended Discord profile banner size is 600 Γ— 240 pixels (5:2 ratio). Per-server profile banners are slightly wider at 680 Γ— 240. Setting a profile banner requires Discord Nitro.

What size is a Discord server banner?

The recommended server banner size is 1920 Γ— 1080 pixels (16:9). Discord accepts a minimum of 960 Γ— 540. A static server banner is unlocked at Boost Level 2, and an animated server banner at Boost Level 3.

Do I need Nitro to change my Discord avatar?

No. Anyone can set a static avatar (PFP). Nitro is only required for an animated (GIF) avatar and for setting a profile banner.

What is the max file size for Discord images?

Profile pictures, profile banners, server icons, and server banners each accept files up to about 10 MB. Emoji are capped at 256 KB and stickers at 512 KB.

Why is my Discord avatar cut off?

Discord crops avatars and server icons into a circle. Anything in the corners of your square image is hidden. Keep the important part of your design inside a centered circle with padding around the edges.

What is the best format for Discord images?

PNG is best for avatars, icons, and banners that need sharp edges or transparency. JPG is fine for photographic banners. GIF is used for animated avatars, icons, and banners where those features are unlocked.
