Discord Server Banner Requirements
Server banners are displayed at the top of your Discord server and create the first impression for new members. The recommended size is 960×540 pixels with a 16:9 aspect ratio.
Keep the top 48 pixels relatively simple - the server name appears there as an overlay. Animated GIF banners require Server Boost Level 3.
Discord Profile Banner Requirements
Profile banners appear behind your avatar on your Discord profile. Discord's Custom Profiles documentation specifies minimum dimensions of 680×240 pixels (a 17:6 ratio), PNG, JPG or animated GIF under 10MB. Full Discord Nitro is required - Nitro Basic does not include it. Note that 600×240 is a different number: it is the recommended minimum for Per-Server Profiles, which is a separate per-server banner.
On desktop, only the center 300 pixels of height are visible - the top and bottom get cropped. Keep important content in the middle.

- Go to Server Settings → Overview
- Find "Server Banner Background"
- Upload your resized banner image

- Open User Settings → Profiles
- Click "Change Banner"

Banner Safe Zone Tips
Discord crops banners for two different reasons, which is why the two banner types have two different rules. A server banner sits in a responsive header that reflows with window width and channel-list state, so Discord reserves the top strip for the server-name overlay regardless of your art. A profile banner sits in a fixed-size popout, so the client crops it to fit. Discord documents the first case and not the second, so treat our profile-banner guidance as a recommendation, not a published spec.
- Server banners: Keep the top 48px clear for the server name overlay
- Profile banners: we recommend keeping key art within the middle 300px of width — the avatar overlaps the lower-left and narrow popouts crop the sides
- Avoid placing text or logos near the edges
