How Does YouTube Pay Creators?

YouTube pays creators in the YouTube Partner Program a share of the ad revenue earned on their videos. YouTube keeps 45% and pays the creator 55% of ad revenue. Your earnings depend on how many monetized views your videos get and your RPM (revenue per 1,000 views).

This calculator multiplies your monthly views by your RPM to estimate ad revenue. Because RPM swings widely between niches and audiences, we show a low, average, and high range so you get a realistic picture rather than a single misleading number.

RPM vs CPM: What's the Difference?

These two terms are often confused, but they measure different things:

  • CPM (cost per mille) is what advertisers pay per 1,000 ad impressions β€” before YouTube takes its cut.
  • RPM (revenue per mille) is what you actually earn per 1,000 video views β€” after YouTube's 45% cut and across all your views, including unmonetized ones.
  • RPM is the more useful number for estimating take-home earnings, which is why this calculator uses RPM.

What Affects Your YouTube Earnings?

Two channels with the same view count can earn very different amounts. The biggest factors are:

Niche

Finance, tech, and business videos command far higher ad rates than gaming, entertainment, or music.

Audience Location

Views from the US, UK, Canada, and Australia pay more than views from regions with lower ad demand.

Watch Time & Format

Longer videos can run more ads, and Shorts monetize at much lower rates than long-form content.

Earnings Beyond Ad Revenue

Ad revenue is only one income stream. Many creators earn more from memberships, sponsorships, and other platforms. If you also stream on Twitch, estimate that income too:

Sources & Methodology

Our estimates use YouTube's official revenue-share model and published RPM benchmarks. We do not invent numbers β€” here is exactly where the figures come from:

Frequently Asked Questions

Most channels earn between $1 and $7 per 1,000 views (RPM), with an average around $3. Finance and tech channels can earn $10+ RPM, while gaming and entertainment often sit closer to $2. Use the calculator above with your own RPM for a personalized estimate.
